this is a really important tip! I am currently studying a masters degree and I am the only student member of a professional organization. Recently I attended a trade exhibition where I was able to meet some members of this organization. All of them told me how they had found their jobs just by being members of this association and using its networking tools. And I myself might be able to get a wonderful internship through it. 
On the other hand, one of them highlighted also the importance of getting involved, as you suggest, by being member of a commitee and so on.
