Recognition: How Do You Do It?

Who doesn’t like being rewarded for good work? Anyone? Anyone? Yeah, I didn’t think so. Reward and recognition is key to building employee morale and an environment where hard work is appreciated. But like they say, it is better to give than to receive, right? What’s your preferred way of being recognized for your great work yourself, and also for recognizing others?

Formal recognition

Many companies, including Intel, have different levels and methods of formally recognizing employees for their contributions. It’s encouraged and is used pretty often from what I see. Usually it’s an online system that has pre-determined reward levels where you can add a note about the person’s contribution and why it was note-worthy. The recipient gets the award and can get a gift card to a local retailer in that amount–or if you’re like me, you’ll save up your awards for something big or a rainy day.

Informal recognition

I have a folder in my inbox that I call “Warm Fuzzies” and it’s full of e-mails that made me feel warm and fuzzy inside. These are notes that colleagues have sent that essentially say, “Good work,” and “Thank you.” Why do I hold onto these e-mails? Because they’re genuine, they were unexpected, and they make me feel good. Whenever I have a frustrating day, and everyone has them, this is the folder I go through, and it reminds me why I do what I do.

Awards on display

Last year, right around this time, I went to a few conferences where Intel was recruiting and met a ton of new people from around the company. When you’re on the road, you tend to hang out together and bond pretty quickly–and that’s what I did. At the end of the week together, one of my colleagues from Arizona joked that I should find a job as an air traffic controller because of the excellent job I did directing traffic at our booth. A few weeks later, I got a package in our internal mail system with a little traffic cop. That’s what I mean by a physical award. It’s not a plaque or a medal, but the thought behind it is priceless.
